THE CORPORATIONS

Resources: Med Tech, Food, Ammo x 2

Costume Requirements: Cleaner than most, wear at least one visible business-influenced items (ties, blazers, etc). Corporate logo patches, brands or tattoos are also common.

This faction is in fact several separate corporations each one with its own objectives and history; some seek technology, some sell protection to other factions, and others act as a home for misfits. One thing is certain: Each corporation seeks out luxury and each has a head, usually known as a CEO. These CEOs rule their respective Corporation with an iron fist that few question or challenge. Each corporation has its own rules and its own line of succession for the CEO position. The rules of succession range from hereditary, to meritocracy to openly challenging the existing CEO to combat or other contests. In 2119, the Allied Havens of Swissland were added to the Corporate fold. This global tier corporate entity has havens around the world and operates several research and supply hubs with a democratic structure.

Those who adhere to the corporate way of survival vary wildly in their allegiances and goals. Some corporations can trace their history back to before the Week of Fire whereas others have sprung forth from the dearth of convenience left by the hundred Year Silence. What is common among all corporations is a defined sense of purpose: to survive, make profitable deals and look good while doing it. The apocalypse was hard on the world, but those with a keen corporate mind have a found a way to spin it to their advantage.

There are many corporations around the world, either carving out their own bits of the ravaged globe or healing it in their own little way.

The following posts detail a few corporations with a stake in the Stormont region.

Faction Profile : Corporations Empty The Allied Havens of Swissland

The Allied Havens of Swissland (The Swiss; SCH)

“Wisdom is never free, but kindness can be.”  - An old Swiss saying
Logo: A red balanced cross, usually on a white field.
Membership : Loose (based on merit & character)

Logo: A red balanced cross, usually on a white field.
Membership : Loose (based on merit & character)

Formerly an unique, global faction of their own, the Swiss are probably the closest to having learned from the mistakes of humanities past. Humanity consumed itself with jealousy over what others have or went to war over a difference in beliefs. While the Swiss (publically) wish to be neutral ground, they have adapted to a more corporate way of life following the mass assault on the hubs and Havens by creatures from Dakkan. Much of their existing structure and traditions still exist, with their desire for peace still being their driving force, however their manufacturing and scavenging effort have shifted focus globally to somewhat more defensive measures since the assaults of 2119.

The Swiss do not want to involve themselves with others’ petty differences, conflicts, or differing opinions, preferring instead to work productively on keeping humanity alive as a whole. If you accept this, they would be willing to trade with you. If you don’t accept it, they would be quite content with watching you die, and collecting some nice salvage from your corpse, as payment for your burial. If you are part of the Swiss, the Swiss come first; picking sides does not happen. If your goal is peace, they can be relied upon to provide security for meetings to arrange diplomatic relations between opposing factions and fellow corporations. Due to their near pacifistic ways they are known to have quite a few researchers and smiths amongst them and are said to always be trying to find better ways to provide peace and security across the wasteland.

History

The Allied Havens of Swissland are a global network of researchers, academics and --according to some-- idealists. Colloquially called the Swiss, whether or not they are from central Europe, this corporation (former faction) chooses to set themselves apart by actively trying to work to keep all of humanity alive, without regard for faction-based alliances. They dedicate their lives to the pursuit of knowledge and the reconstruction of the world, with a strong focus on education and mentorship. Founded in August of 2095, 2 years after Vaud broke The Silence, the Allied Havens proudly display red crosses as a symbol of hope, unity and as they claim “an inversion of past mistakes”. Primarily Eurocentric in their resources, the Swiss have numerous havens across Europe and North Africa, with an influx of smaller communication hubs and farms across the globe since the success of Project LiveWire in 2108. They hope to be establishing Havens in Nippon and Old Canada within the next decade or so.

The four oldest Havens are Vaud (Swissland), Peel (Manx), Bath (United Kingdom, more commonly being called Youkay) and Calais (Normandy). Their capital haven, Vaud, is more heavily armed and armoured than most of their other Havens lumped together with their primary focus being the study and containment of the Chasm --a massive, highly active Rift which has swallowed the ruins of Geneva. Peel and Calais serve as ports for their carefully restored barges as well as academic centres with the hordes of desperately sought books, while the haven of Bath is currently a leader in medical care and research.

While the Swiss may seek to save the world, they actually teach pragmatism over good intentions. Strip whatever is useful from the dead before you burn or bury them, don’t waste time arguing with an idiot and don’t get involved with the squabbles of another faction.

Laws

The Swiss have revived the basics of the Justinian Code with one notable exception:

In all matters and pursuits, the preservation of the Swiss comes first and trumps all other complaint when appropriate justice is being decided.

While the Swiss treat most things pragmatically and may or may not adhere to all of their laws as the situation dictates, amongst themselves they have laws relating to all aspects of life including but not limited to plagiarism, theft, murder, assault, marriage, divorce, land division, land transfer, fair work practices, and even potluck organisation.

Overall the Swiss deem their actions as moral and thereby justified based on whether or not it is for the betterment of humanity and the likelihood of it causing social division. This can often lead to lengthy debates regarding the smallest slights, which leads to most Swiss doing what they can to generally get along with each other or at least not get caught when their actions may be debated.

Structure

Maintaining a democratic structure within themselves, the Swiss value merit and intelligence when selecting their political leaders. While charisma may certainly play a role when choosing a representative to engage with other factions, when determining their leadership, the Swiss are taught from a young age to think critically, question everything and seek out empirical data for their beliefs. Religion has no place in their society but they will not openly mock those who find faith a comforting crutch.

Chancellor - Global Leader of all Havens, the Chancellor constantly travels between Havens, returning to Vaud each August for Hope Day celebrations. Their terms are four years long, unless the College calls for their resignation. A Chancellor may only serve for 3 consecutive terms, but may reapply after a four year break with at least 30% of Collegiate support.

College - each Haven elects one Professor to be their voice in the global affairs of the Swiss. This global body mainly focuses on political and social matters. The various research projects active in each independent Haven or Hub seem to operate fairly independently of the College Decrees, but in actuality their progress is usually closely monitored.

Each Professor is expected to hire on Aides to advise them on all matters of life and administration. While it is encouraged for each position to ultimately be decided by the people of the Haven they serve, Swiss pragmatism often streamlines this process, only seeking public votes on the Professor’s Aides in cases where there are applicants of equal merit and qualification.

Hubs, being smaller, more project-centric communities, follow a looser process of administration based purely on merit and the needs of the Hub’s project. Each Hub has a parent Haven that they report to and may request resources from, but ultimately they are usually self-sufficient communities under the purview of an appointed leader. These leaders have the equivalent social standing as a Professor’s Aide.

Youth are sent to Intern within Hubs to widen their world experience and best discover what talents they may bring to the rebirth of humanity. If one chooses to join the Swiss, you will be treated as an Intern until your talent has been reviewed by your Hub’s leader.

The Allied Havens of Swissland in Stormont

Fairly new to the region, the representatives of the Swiss have made their home at the Stormont Communication Hub along the St. Lawrence as well as a farming compound called the Garry Hub established some 30km north along the shores of Loch Garry. Both of these Hubs still report to the Haven of Peel in Manx across the Atlantic Ocean and therefore work far closer with other factions than most Swiss hubs. They have made no secret that they wish to eventually establish a Haven in Old Canada and are intent on recovering old tech and establishing relations with rift worlds.

The following two lead the local Hubs and hold status equivalent to a Professor's Aide:

Dr. Melissa Kine - Senior Technician at the Stormont Communication Hub, Dr. Kine has been in Canada since 2108 and is one of the founding members of Project LiveWire. With a variety of visible mutations as a consequence of her work studying Rifts and Rift Beasts, Dr. Kine will often use Interns to relay her wishes or wisdom, when her physical dexterity is not required. An avid learner, her research spans multiple trades, while she knows “just enough to not get herself killed” when it comes to the rougher aspects of life.

Mira Dupuis - (Acting) Chief of Agriculture at the Garry Hub. A position formerly held by Andre Dupuis, Mira's father, Mira chose to remain with the Swiss when her father left following the assaults of 2119 and the death of her mother. Mira learned both chemistry and hunting from her father and trapping from her mother; her trapping and marksmanship were instrumental in capturing live specimens for the study of the Avian Sickness plaguing the world since March 2120. The success of the Garry Hub led to most Interns also being trained in the martial arts to be able to protect the farming compound from raiders; since 2119 Mira has been over-seeing the reconstruction and restoration of the farming hub with slow but steady progress.Formerly an unique, global faction of their own, the Swiss are probably the closest to having learned from the mistakes of humanities past.
